7 Moving Supplies Worth Hiring Instead of Buying

Why buy supplies you will use for one weekend? Here are seven we think are smarter to hire.

Quick answer: Hire the bulky items you only need once: heavy duty crates and a dolly and a hand trolley and moving blankets and a wardrobe box and a mattress bag and a TV bag. Our hire starts at $5 for a small crate and $15 for a dolly or mattress bag for two weeks. Buy cheap consumables like tape and bubble wrap and labels instead.

Buying packing supplies for one move adds up. Boxes and trolleys and covers and special bags get used for a few days and then sit in the garage. Hiring the big items and buying only the small consumables can save you cost and clutter.

Here are seven moving supplies we hire out and why each can be worth hiring. At the end there is a short list of things you are better off buying.

1. Heavy duty moving crates

The crate is the star. Heavy Duty Moving Crates arrive assembled with attached lids and need no tape. They come in small (45L) and medium (72L) and large (135L). We are the only heavy duty moving box supplier in Australia that rents 3 different sizes. For a two week hire a small crate is $5 and a medium is $7.50 and a large is $10. For a full home most people choose a package instead.

2. Moving dolly

A Moving Dolly lets you stack several crates and wheel them in one trip. It is made to work with our crates. It is available in medium and large and starts at $15 for two weeks. It saves your back and cuts the number of trips between the house and the truck.

3. Heavy duty hand trolley

For appliances and awkward boxes the Heavy Duty Hand Trolley has a 250kg load rating and puncture-proof tyres. It starts at $15 for two weeks. A trolley is not something most households need again after the move.

4. Moving blankets

Moving blankets (180cm x 200cm) pad tables and cabinets and appliances against scratches. They are $5 each for two weeks. Hiring a few for a move is cheaper than buying them and finding somewhere to store them.

5. Wardrobe moving box

The Heavy Duty Wardrobe Moving Box has a built-in hanging rail so clothes stay on their hangers. It measures 620 x 530 x 1230mm and starts at $25 for two weeks. You can move suits and dresses and uniforms without folding or repacking.

6. Waterproof mattress bag

A Waterproof Mattress Bag helps keep a mattress clean and protected from dirt and dust and moisture while it goes through the house and onto the truck. It is available in single and double and queen and king and starts at $15 for two weeks. It is particularly handy in Brisbane's storm season.

7. TV storage bag

The TV Storage Bag has a soft quilted padded interior with integrated hard-shell screen protection and carry handles. It comes in two sizes for TVs up to 60 inches and starts at $50 for two weeks. If you do not still have the original box this is a good alternative.

Bonus: compartment boxes for fragile kitchenware

The Glass & Crockery Moving Boxes (glassware and plates and mugs and bowls) are from $15 each and keep fragile items separated. They are also worth considering if you own a lot of glassware.

What to buy instead of hire

Some items are cheap consumables that you use once. We sell these and you will find them on the Moving Supplies page:

  • Packing tape and a tape gun and fragile tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Moving crate labels and security ties
  • A permanent marker pen
  • Furniture covers
Tip
Note that if you are hiring crates you will not need much tape at all.

How to decide

  • Hire big and bulky items you will only use once or twice.
  • Buy small consumables.
  • Skip anything you can borrow from family and friends.

Hire vs buy: a quick way to think about it

Ask three questions about each item:

  1. How many times will I use it? If the answer is once or twice then hiring usually makes more sense.
  2. Where would I store it afterwards? A dolly or a stack of crates takes up real space in a unit or a garage.
  3. How much does it protect? Items that protect furniture and mattresses and TVs are worth having at the right moment.

Which supplies for which move?

Type of move Worth adding
Studio or one bedroom apartment Moving dolly and a wardrobe box and a mattress bag
Family home Extra dollies and moving blankets and glassware and plate and dish boxes
Storm season move Mattress bag and moving blankets and lidded crates
Home with a big TV and glassware TV storage bag and glassware box

How hire length works

Hire starts at two weeks and each product page lets you choose a longer period. The price shown depends on the hire length you select so check the product page for the figure that matches your dates. If you need more time later let us know before your scheduled collection.

Protecting furniture on the day

Blankets and covers do the most good when they are applied before furniture moves. Wrap tables and cabinets and appliances in a moving blanket and secure it before it goes through a doorway. Take doors off hinges only if you know how to put them back. Keep the pathway clear and move slowly on steps.

A note on timing

We deliver hired supplies with your crates on the delivery date you choose (on that day or up to five days earlier) and collect them from your new address on your final hire date or up to five days after. That means you can add a dolly or a mattress bag to the same booking and avoid a second trip to the shops. Add what you need when you book your crates and the whole order arrives together.
